F3OS Junior is an edition of F3OS that is specifically targeted toward old computers. If you’ve been looking for a filtered Linux system that runs well on computers built somewhere around 2010 as well as newer systems, F3OS Junior is just what you’ve been looking for, featuring the lightweight IceWM (Ice Window Manager).

Latest improvements (November 17, 2025):

  • The Waterfox web browser has been replaced with Chromium, which is the base for Google Chrome. I discovered that Chromium has a setting in it where you can set it to conserve as much memory as possible, which is a must for old computers.
  • In F3OS Junior, the Thunar file manager has now been replaced with PCManFM. Even though Thunar is a pretty lightweight file manager, memory tests I ran consistently showed PCManFM as using less memory than Thunar. Thunar is, however, still included with F3OS Original.
  • The Evince PDF Reader has now been replaced with Atril, the same PDF reader used in the Original version of F3OS.
  • A bug in Sakura, the terminal emulator application in F3OS Junior, where Ctrl-X would not work when using Nano, has now been fixed.

Latest improvements (May 18, 2025): GNOME System Tools, which manages user accounts, has been replaced with MATE User Tools; the default menu in IceWM in F3OS Junior now hides category sub-menus.
